NASS vow to strengthen laws against rape

Rape worse than hate speech

To protect children from sexual and other forms of abuses, the National Assembly is to strengthen the nation’s extant laws that relate to rape, Deputy President Ovie Omo-Agege has hinted.

This comes as he called for a change of attitude by Nigerians towards the stigmatisation of rape victims.
Omo-Agege spoke during the official launch of the Campaign Against Rape, organised by the West African Freelance Journalists Association, at the weekend in Abuja. He frowned on situations where stigmatisation was targeted at rape victims instead of the culprits.

Represented by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Electronic and New Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, Omo-Agege regretted that African women had in recent times been subjected to various abuses.
